2002 Summer Celebration Grand Prize Winners

Lick's Franchise The Winning McKlellan Family: Accepting the Sony Home Entertainment System from Mississauga Lick's store owner Ron Voth are (from left), Andrew, 11; Gordon, Heather, and Jeffrey McKlellan, 13.

The McKlellan family of Mississauga won the grand prize of a Sony Home Entertainment Surround Sound System – a 32-inch Trinitron TV, Sony amplifier, four speakers and Sony DVD -- in Lick's Summer Contest. Customers at the 24 Lick's stores in the chain were eligible to win the draw for the Entertainment System and each store gave away gas barbecues and hundreds of other prizes throughout the summer. But there was only one grand prize and Ron Voth, owner of the store on Dundas at Dixie in Mississauga was on hand to present the prize. The winners had to remove the seats in their van to truck home the multi-boxed prize.

It was actually Jeffrey McKlellan's ballot that was drawn for the grand prize but the system won't be going into the 13-year-old's Mississauga bedroom (not that he thought it would). Nope. His father, independent film editor Gord, knows all about quality. He's currently filming in Toronto a one-hour TV series for Showtime in the U.S. called "Soul Food.," and he knows exactly how good Sony entertainment equipment is. It's what the pros use and he won't buy anything else himself, he says. So this system is going to be enjoyed by the whole family – his wife, Heather, a sales supervisor for Data Business Forms in Brampton, and their other son, Andrew 11.

The McKlellan family has been going regularly to the Lick's location since moving to Mississauga a few years ago. But more than 20 years ago both Gord and Heather were regular customers of the original Toronto Lick's on Queen Street in the Beaches – without knowing each other at the time.

Proof again that Lick's truly is a family restaurant.
